The Story Behind Gourds Unmasked 

Often I am asked how I came up with the name Gourds Unmasked, especially since I tend to make a lot of gourd masks.  My first experience with gourds was growing them, and as they began to develop, they seemed like little children, starting out so small, then growing and growing, developing a particular shape and color  and thickness of "skin".  As I watched them grow and develop, it was as if they also took on a personality. As they dry and mold, that personality becomes more and more evident. I see my role as an artist as uncovering or revealing that personality...unmasking the character that is already there in the gourd. In revealing the personality of a gourd, I am also, in a way, unmasking myself.  What I see in a gourd is also what I see in myself and my experiences.
