The Artistic Scientist known as
K. Denise Wally I currently live in
Lincoln, NE with my boyfriend, Christopher, and lots of gourd creatures.
I mostly earn my living as a scientist (forestry, chemistry, soil
science, and geology), but like a few famous scientists, I see the
artistic aspect of science. I am currently working on a secondary
science teaching certificate with an endorsement in Natural Sciences.

Like many
other gourd artists, I am mostly self-taught in art. I have expressed myself
creatively since I was a child, and was encouraged by my mother , who is a very
artistic/creative type of person. I enjoy woodburning, clay sculpture,
fiber arts, and painting and have since I was very young. Only recently
have I taken up gourd art. I love working with gourds because it
allows me to incorporate all of my other artsy skills, and some
scientific ones, into it. Gourds
are a wonderful media, they are like a combination of working with wood
and leather. I especially love the 3-dimensional aspect and variety
of gourds.
I have a never ending source of
ideas, more ideas than time or gourds at this point, though I'm working
on the gourd part. I belong
to an informal gourd group in Omaha, made up of the most incredible,
wonderful gourd women. The amount of talent and creativity that comes
out of this group never ceases to amaze me. They are a fun bunch
and are a major source of
inspiration
for me. I am also inspired by
"nature". I have a habit of picking up things; rocks, sticks, feathers,
bones, thorns, and other natural objects; to incorporate into the gourd
art.
I also enjoy
snow skiing (downhill and cross-country), hiking, caving, traveling,
writing, and gardening. Growing your own source of gourds is a big
plus!
I love music
and chocolate and food from other countries. I have lived in 7 states
(Oklahoma, Utah, Wyoming, Texas, Mississippi, Vermont and Nebraska) but
call NE Oklahoma home. I have traveled to 48 states (missing Alaska
and Rhode Island), 5 countries, and three continents.
I made an appearance on HGTV’s “That’s Clever” in
August 2006. The
episode is HCLVR-218. Go to
